When God created Adam, after giving him the promise to be fruitful, rule over the earth and subdue all, the first thing God did was to put Adam in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it <Gen 2:15>, as a form of serving the Lord. God’s wisdom and power were reflected through the way Adam served the Lord. Even his co-worker (Eve) made her appearance when he was serving the Lord. From here, the big idea of serving God is clearly revealed. Today, many people consider serving as hard work. When talking about serving the Lord, some may think they had forgone their energy and time and also have to be involved in the complexity of various personnel matters. Hence, when a person serves to an extent of being in a tired state, he will feel, “I only give but did not receive”, therefore he chooses to give up his serving. Then some who advocate teachings of "grace" will say that “God does not want our service, but our hearts. Let us not lose the grace in our hearts through our serving." Often, such teachings are very appealing to those who have served long in the church but are withered in their spirits. However, these people often gradually become lazy by “enjoying grace" but not truly serving and do not show grace and power in their serving. In fact, all of God's grace is manifested in the serving of believers, and not from us "enjoying grace". Although serving feels like giving (whether it is time, energy, money, gifts, talents, abilities, etc.), it is the way to connect with God's grace. Therefore, Paul said in <1 Co 15:10> ... “I worked harder than all of [the apostles]---yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” Indeed, your motivation to serve is as great as how real the grace you have experienced. But why is it so easy to develop grumblings and helplessness in our serving? That is, we cannot see the grace of the Lord, and we enter into the serving of man. Human serving is limited. This is because human perspective is narrow, is easily affected by situations, circumstances, and people's words. Man's serving is less often guided by the Holy Spirit, but driven more only by things. Human serving does not see the Lord's help, but only results in greater effort and weariness. Human serving does not start with faith, but is influenced by fear (such as fear of incompetence, fear of not being understood, fear of friction with others, confrontation, etc.). In fact, this is not the case for serving in the gracious light. It is a serving which sees God's presence, help, guidance and anointing. It is gaining more in serving, rather than losing due to serving. Some people may agree this is so, but, each of us has limited time, we have to take care of our family and work, and may not have so much time and energy to attend meetings and be involved in serving. In fact, it is not easy to serve God, otherwise the apostle would not say that he worked harder than others. But if we think we need to trade off to serve, it is no longer the spirit of serving. Instead, in seeing the value and glory of serving, we are willing to participate and be involved. Such people definitely do not have a “trade-off perspective” but because they see the earnestness of the Lord and because of the love for His church, they give themselves fully to the work of the Lord <1 Co 15:58>. Such serving will surely share the joy of the Lord eventually, and not go into grumblings and bitterness. The Lord Jesus also gave us a very important teaching in serving: As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work <Jn 9:4>. This verse tells us that there are definitely limitations in each of our serving. Even the Lord Jesus Himself knew that He had physical and time limits on earth. We all live on the earth with time, space, and physical limitations. God has set a mission for us at some point, and if we miss it, it will not come again. Maybe we can influence some people at a certain age level; or we can do certain things when we have energy; or we have certain convictions and eagerness in certain situations. If we are busy with the world or are only concerned about our own difficulties, we will not be able to bring out God’s glory and goodness in our serving. Indeed, talent, time, physical strength, and opportunity will be lost. There is a term for serving at every stage of our lives. Let us offer a wonderful serving in our limited time!
