<Ro 6:14> tells us believers, "For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.” This verse tells us that we are no longer condemned for our sins because of the Lord’s grace. Sin no longer has a dominant right in the lives of blessed people like us. Neither can sin entrap us in death. But this sentence also carries another spiritual meaning, that is, a person under grace will not be prompted to sin freely. On the contrary, he already is in enmity with sin, and he will certainly continue to fight against sin. He will put to death the misdeeds of the body by the Holy Spirit <Ro 8:13> and he will abstain from sinful desires and fleshly lusts <1 Pe 2:11>. This is the clear proof that God's grace has come upon him. But in the fight against sin, we often feel powerless because of our sinful nature. We will feel weary and discouraged because our weak human nature cannot bear the burdens of life and is often affected and entangled by sin. Some brethren in Christ often go into self-groaning and self-pity because of this situation. If not, they have been living in accusations because of the bondage of sin, and they gradually become numb to sin. In such a situation, <Heb 12: 5-6> tells us that God will save us from the entanglement of sin by His discipline for our good in order that we may share in His holiness <Heb 12:10>. Some people may feel, "We are already so helpless and in pain. Why does God still discipline us?" Therefore, many people do not regard discipline as grace. But the Lord clearly said, “The Lord disciplines the ones He loves.” Because indeed, when we are trapped in sin, we can only feel our helplessness and pain, but we do not realize that there is hardness and stubbornness in the spirit. Sometimes, although we do not want to continue to stay in sin, our emotions and will are being controlled, so we let ourselves continue to stay in that situation. Or, sometimes, because we have been engaging in fruitless deeds of darkness for a long time and our conscience gradually does not sound us up, God's discipline will then come. God's discipline may come from the rebuke of the Holy Spirit in the heart, or sometimes from the words of reproach and exhortation given to us, or sometimes from negative situations (like God through the enemies of Israel, attacked the Israelites), or even from attacks of the flesh <1 Co 5:5>. Of course, our God is full of grace and mercy and is slow to anger. Therefore, we must not think that God attacks us for no reason, such that we have a heart that “fears God" instead of one that loves God. In fact, such a perception is from the accusation of the devil, which makes a person’s heart hardened toward God because of his unwillingness to repent, which leads to him developing a misunderstanding towards God. In fact, if a person is not disciplined by God, he will never understand the grace of God. God's discipline on those whom He loves is to save their souls and prevent them from falling into a more hardened and numb state. Therefore, <Joe 2:13> says, "Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.” In fact, what God wants in His discipline, is the repentance of His people, not to inflict disasters as punishments. In addition, we need to understand one truth about God's discipline, which is, His discipline is not punitive, but to test us. Sometimes God disciplines us not because we made mistakes, but because our temperaments are too weak to bear the mission and challenges God has given us. Therefore, God's chastisement is sometimes like a form of discipline in order to strengthen our hearts so that we can withstand the different types of challenges in our lives and ministry. Otherwise, we will gradually become a slack believer. Many believers do not study the Bible too much because of slack, they also do not wrestle in their prayers, or ask for anointing in serving their ministries; when they encounter difficulties, they give up. Therefore, <Heb 12:11-12> tells us that those who have gone through discipline will not only produce the harvest of peace but also righteousness (his conscience is not rebuked). Although such a person may have feeble arms and weak knees, he will stand up strong (and have the ability to serve and run without being weary). Therefore, when we understand the grace of God, we must understand what God will accomplish in His great love. He not only saves us, but also disciplines us to protect us from sin.
