Think about it, what is the main goal of Christian faith? We attend meetings weekly, read the Bible and pray daily, but what exactly do these eventually point to? This is like a businessman thinking of various details when doing business, like management, sales, purchasing, etc., but the ultimate goal is profit. So, think about what is the ultimate goal of faith? Simply speaking, it is righteousness. Lord Jesus said, “Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven <Mt 5:20>.” In fact, if we think carefully, this sentence is quite heavy, because the direct meaning is that if the former does not happen, the latter will not be accomplished (that is, there is no way to see the face of God). In fact, when we talk about the subject of "righteousness", few believers think more or are eager to pursue more of it. Most believers, even mature believers, often expect themselves to love the Lord more, be more spiritual, godlier, or more anointed to serve the Lord, but they do not think of pursuing more of God's righteousness. The basic reason is that they think they have been justified by faith and that Christ has become their righteousness. Therefore, they think that "righteousness" is not something that a person who believes in the Lord needs to pursue, but must believe with assurance. However, Lord Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness...” <Mt 6:33>. The word "first" does not refer to the sequence but your priority should always be to consider your faith. It is not to first seek the kingdom and righteousness of God, and then to pursue academics, career, marriage, or to learn to be a person, serve, get along with others, etc. When we examine closely, the faith living of many is indeed one where after the Sabbath, they more actively arrange their entire week ahead with activities they want to pursue and carry out. In all of these, they do not think about God's kingdom and righteousness. In fact, "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" is to do everything with this as the centre. This is the core of the entire faith living. Therefore, we ask what is God's righteousness? How do we surpass the Pharisees and teachers of the law in righteousness? There are many interpreters of the Bible who will regard this as the righteousness that God has given us through Christ, which is additional righteousness credited to man. Because the righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees is perfect righteousness, no one can achieve this perfection without the additional righteousness brought by Christ. Therefore, the righteous will be justified by faith. This view is correct, because after this, Lord Jesus said, anyone who is angry with a brother or sister or scolds them would have violated the law of “You shall not murder”, and anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already violated the law of “You shall not commit adultery”. But we must ask, after a person has received this additional righteousness, what is the evidence? Martin Luther said, “We are righteous, but also sinners.” The righteousness of God has entered our sinful life through our faith, and has made us who are still sinful to have the righteousness of God at the same time. But in the process of sanctification, this righteousness does not remain stagnant, and neither is this a rigid theological concept. This righteousness will make us more Christ-like in our lives, and make each and every of our actions more and more filled with the glory of Christ <Ro 6:4>. Therefore, <Ro 8:30> tells us that those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. The so-called glory is the result of sanctification. From this, we can say that if a person truly receives the righteousness of Christ, his life will surely bear the “fruit of righteousness” <Phil 1:11>. Therefore, when explaining <Mt 5:20>, another group of interpreters brought out a necessary warning, that is, unless our life continues to bear the fruit of the righteousness which surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, our faith could possibly be counterfeit. Of course, we are definitely not teaching justification by works, but we will know that the Bible always teaches us to express true faith through our deeds in order for us to know that we have the true righteousness of God in us. Through today's message, we must clearly confirm the righteousness the scribes and Pharisees have, and how we can surpass them.
