Some believers face temptations throughout their lives, and because of temptations, their conscience is often condemned. In particular, when temptations reach a certain point, our heart knows that we have been tempted by selfish desires. At that time, we simply cannot enjoy all the blessings God has given us. For example, a person who is often tempted by money cannot enjoy the convenience that money brings to him. He cannot be content and joyful, nor use his wealth to build relationships with people. On the contrary, he often feels lacking when he has less, and is greedier when he has more. Or, a person who is often tempted by lascivious seduction will definitely not enjoy the love of his spouse. He has an unsatisfied passion in sexuality which is a kind of bondage. Or, vanity is also a very common temptation. A vain person has no real confidant. He always wears a mask when he is with people. In fact, a vain believer who already has the Holy Spirit in his heart cannot rejoice in temptations. On the contrary, the concerned Holy Spirit in him causes him to feel very helpless and unsatisfied. But because the desires in his own heart cause the lust to be very real, his conscience cannot help but feel condemned. Thus, some people feel extremely hopeless in temptations, because the forces that are tempting and enticing them are extremely strong, and their hearts know clearly that they continue to be held captive by their yearnings and will. They cannot experience any ability to resist the temptations in their hearts. But actually, when the person turns away from temptations, the power of temptations is reduced. Some people fight with temptations throughout their lives, going in and out of temptations, but they do not know how to persevere under trial. <Jas 1:12> tells us “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” <2 Ti 2:22> Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue... along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” Truly, one has to persevere under temptations and flee from our desires. God also promises rewards and crowns in overcoming them. What is more important than persevering under temptations is we clearly know that every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights... <Jas 1:17>. In fact, those who have been living in temptations cannot see God's reward, and because they cannot see, they are constantly being tempted. Therefore, what we must deal with in order to persevere under temptations is to deal with our carnal eyes. The eyes that are used to seeing things through desires must be renewed and sanctified. In fact, men fall into temptations because the eyes of their hearts are already led and tempted by desires. Eve “saw” that the fruit of the tree was good for food <Ge 3:6>; Lot looked around and “saw” that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered <Ge 13:10>; David got up from his bed and from the roof, he “saw” a woman bathing and the woman was very beautiful <2 Sam 11:2>. Many people say that their eyes cause them to sin. But in fact, there is a heart in our physical eyes. Some people's eyes always see God's help and provision. They can see the provision of God in their simple life. They see God's mercy among unlovable people, and also see God's help in distress. But some people's eyes continue to seek and want to receive more. In everything they see, hear, think, they hold a perspective that they are not good enough, not successful enough, not pretty enough, not rich enough and hence they cannot help falling into temptations. Therefore, the eyes within the heart is the determining factor as to whether a person falls into temptation or lives in satisfaction. If we do not use the Lord’s word to keep the eyes of the heart wide open, we will always see wrongly. <Jas 1:16> The result of seeing wrongly will cause us to fall into temptations. Therefore, persevering under temptations and having blessed perspective is closely related.
