We all know that humans have choices and they are making choices every moment, in terms of what to eat, what to buy, what to use, what to follow and even what to believe. However, we seldom think how we are being influenced to make decisions and fewer people have confidence in their choices. Most people just observe the outcomes of their choices and from there, do some reflections to make another decision. But there are those who always remain in the wrong choice, and cannot walk out of their wrong decision. After regreting about their wrong choice, they make the same wrong decision when a similar situation arises. Why is that so? Underlying this is the nature of the creation and fall of man. Actually, everytime when we make choices, there is always the consideration of “morality and profitability”. Morality refers to “what is right”, profitability refers to “what is good”. When mankind is created, their moral will inform them that obeying God is right, therefore in their obedience, they do not eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil <Gen 2:2-3>, and they enjoyed happiness and power before God <Gen 1:28>, and that is considered good. However, when mankind is deceived, their views on morality and profitablity are distorted, and they do not recognise what is right or good, therefore they make choices in their fallen morality and selfish interests, and they continuously sin through their choices. What it means by “fallen morality”, is not just about doing things that are really evil, but it is having no accountability to the omni-benevolent God who is higher than oneself in morality. He will make what he thinks is the right choices based on what pleases him. Also, the “selfish interests” not only refer to the desire to benefit oneself, but man does not seek things to love God and others. Whatever he seeks, decides, does, is based on what he thinks is beneficial. Therefore, for born-again Christians like us, we must know that there is a battle in our hearts before we make any choice. For example, we parents have the responsibility to raise the children God has given us well, and offer them to the Lord, fitting to be used by God, but we may also make choices according to our selfish desires. When we serve the Lord, sometimes we know we must be faithful to the truth, and serve the Lord and others, but other times, we may unknowingly serve our own stomach <Ph 3:19>. Most people only know what they want, but they do not realise in what they want (their choices), it is a reflection of their perspectives on morality and profitability. Therefore, if there is no truth to tell us what is right and truly benefits us, our choices will be wrong. We could be affected by a momentary feeling in a situation, people we come in touch with or a piece of information we hear. For example, we may feel tired and do not want to come for meetings; we may feel poor and do not want to tithe; we may feel depressed when we hear colleagues speaking about some bad things regarding the company, and end up feeling unmotivated at work. Indeed, when we are used to such reactions and life, slowly, we will become a person who goes against our conscience and unconsciously make decisions that are not beneficial to ourselves – eg. gambling, drug abuse, adultery, theft, hatred, etc. Some people clearly know that continuing to live like this is bad, but they choose to continue living like this, that is because they have given a foothold to the devil for a long time and their will is in bondage. Indeed, we must be cautious not to take matters of “will” lightly. God gives us the will to turn to God, the resolve to do good works and depart from sin. These are all related to exercising our will. Today, our problem is not making the wrong choices, but allowing ourselves to remain in the wrong decisions or not choosing (God), allowing the devil to gain a foothold. Or, some believers have never received an assured heart in their choices, but only react to the situation. They are like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. When things are good, they praise God, when situation becomes difficult, they grumble. <Jas 1:7> says: The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
