In every era that Christians live in, they face a common challenge of “not compromising” with the world, and not being an “obsolete” believer. However, these two (not compromising and not becoming obsolete) do not seem to go well together. In particular, believers living in city today face pressures from their environment. The world values, languages, demands, and practical difficulties, are always giving us some kind of unknown pressure, leading us to compromise with the world. However, the Bible clearly calls us to set apart, and do not think about earthly but heavenly matters. When a believer thinks about heavenly matters, he can’t help but ask himself, “What should I do with my life situations and rhythm?” Students need time to study; those who are working need the energy to work; the married with kids need to have their marital living and raise their children. When we become parents or shepherds, we will realize that our kids and brethren are all facing such pressures in their faith. When we are made to face the reality of shepherding them, we listen to the various difficulties presented by them. Some are very subjective, but they sound logical. Have we ever pondered about this dilemma? At times, we may seem to receive some kind of answers or methods from God’s word, but those beside us who also wish to follow the Lord may not necessarily receive it the same way. Do we think deeper about their situations? In addition, when Christians face the external world (pagans) and are challenged by them in our faith, sometimes, do we deny them hastily, or we explain with our current theological knowledge which “people have heard before”, not thinking deeper about the doubts these non-believers raised? Hence, gradually, Christians may easily exude a sense of “only talk about theories”, but not able to put themselves in others’ shoes practically and genuinely. Neither could they apply the unchanging word of God in man’s problems, or provide answers to their queries in layman terms. In this, our response may be, “It isn’t that we do not want, rather, we cannot.” Actually, answer is in listening more. “Listening” is the channel through which we receive wisdom. How to listen? It is “double listening” (this term is described in Pastor’s Stott’s book “Contemporary believers”), i.e. we need to listen to God, but we also need to listen to the world simultaneously. It may sound misleading, for the Bible only instructs us not to love the world, but it does not instruct us to listen to the world. Certainly, the Bible is God’s revelation to men. It reveals about God, eternity, the universe, and all that are in the world. Without God’s word, no one can know God and the world we are living in correctly. But we also need to understand, God is speaking to us through this world (general revelation), and make us live in this world. This world is the field where we live out God’s word, and the platform where we proclaim His grace. Perhaps we are very well versed in the word of God theologically and rationally, but this does not mean we are correctly led by the Spirit of truth. Maybe, the truth of “loving others as self” is not happening in our spousal living, or we have failed to share in the burden of our brethren. We may go into theological debates with people, but we cannot evangelize with colleagues and relatives who are non-believers. Why such discrepancies? Because we do not listen, or we have not listened accurately. Sometimes we shut off our spiritual eyes, sometimes we have some pre-determined mindset, or sometimes, we cannot listen because we still carry our religious nature in us. In this lesson of submitting to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, perhaps it is most difficult to listen to both God and the world simultaneously. Indeed, in this era where Internet and information are so advanced, it is so easy to have our own kind of theory and own preferred voices inside us. If we do not listen to the voice of the world, we cannot lead people towards the right path. Over here, we also need to be careful about “our mentality of listening to the world?” Some believers listen to the world without a vigilant heart, or they just want to receive something that is compatible to their mindset, or worse – they merely want to satisfy their temperament of delighting in new and fresh theories. If such is the case, they may easily fall into a state of “being stumbled by their listening”. May we receive Lord’s personal guidance in the matter of double listening.
