The Bible commands us saints to rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. <1 Th 5:16-18>. The Bible presents God’s will not only as what should be done, but as a state of the heart (joy and thanksgiving). The truth is, a person needs joy. When a person is not happy, he is in a state where he cannot submit to God. Just imagine, how can a person love others in a depressed state? Can a person serve the Lord in sorrows? And who in their worries can share the good news that saves? Actually, we can wrestle with God, or cry out to God in our sufferings, but if our heart is always “unhappy”, that shows that we are not moving towards casting our burdens unto the Lord. And soon, we will fall into a state where we indulge in our sinful desires. During the Chinese New Year, we will see bustling and joyous atmosphere, we will also see people’s actions and inclinations towards seeking pleasures and fun. But in those things, there is no joy. In fact, since the fall, man has been seeking but never finding the “happiness and bliss that cannot be taken away”. This is because such happiness and bliss can only come from a person’s knowing the righteous, loving and omnipotent Lord and relying on Him as he lives. David knew this Lord, that is why he was filled with joy in his afflictions. Paul knew this Lord, that is why in all circumstances, he had the secret to rejoice in the Lord <Ph 4:13>. The Bible in <Ne 8:10> instructed the saints, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength”. Very often, believers want to rely on the Lord for anointing, answered prayers, prosperity, success or all kinds of needs to be met. However, very few believers seek to find joy from the Lord. Indeed, when we receive joy from the Lord, that is our strength. The power for the workplace, ministries, household or evangelism, etc comes from this. However, what we rely on the Lord to receive is often not joy, but the fulfillment of some needs. These do not give us strength, and very soon they will lead us into lack and emptiness in our spirits.  If we have not tasted the joy in the Lord for a long time, we must ask ourselves if we are using the wrong ways to satisfy ourselves. If so, we should stop our methods to seek pleasures and fun. Perhaps, you may be unhappy and have been trying to find new experiences, such as travel, exercise, shopping, sex, meeting new people, etc, but you must go back to the only way God has given you, to be Holy Spirit-filled. In churches today, believers are most ignorant about how to be Holy Spirit-filled. Therefore, we see that there are many programmes in church, the believers are busy serving, and the pulpit is full of messages that seem relevant, but do we see more believers who are filled with joy in their lives? Not only do we not see that, but we also see people inside and outside of church being driven by demands. Believers are no different from the worldly people, they are busy with life, and on top of that, they are busy with serving in the church. But do they have the strength from the joy in the Lord? Paul said, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” <Ep 5:18>. Only when we are Spirit-filled, we can have the joy of satisfaction before God.
