Basically, there are 3 highly valued attributes in men; they are interest, aptitude, and determination. When we discuss how a person perform well in his studies, work, dealing of things, or serving, and receive approvals from all, we often think it is because of these 3 attributes. Because of the lack in these attributes, or if they are used on incorrect places, it may cause much destructions in people’s lives. Let us ponder on these 3 attributes: (1) Interest. It refers to our liking. Generally, we will hear people saying, “In things I like, I will do well”. If one likes cooking, naturally she is able to cook good dishes; if exercise, naturally we will go exercise frequently, and may become an outstanding sportsman. If we like a subject, we will study it well. Indeed, interest gives us the most direct motivation. But we know that if a person just work according to his interest, he will have many inadequacies in life. Can we imagine if a person does not study if he has no interest, or do not work because of lack of interest, or indulge in computer games just because he is interested in it. There are many things in life that are outside of our interest, which we ought to learn and do. Therefore, a person who overtly yields to his interest will not improve; in other word, he is not led by the Holy Spirit. Interest serves to assist us, not to restrict us. Often, we thought we have interest in certain things if we do them well. From here, we know that interest is relative. (2) Aptitude. We all yearn for this, because the common saying is that one with aptitude learns faster and better. Therefore, parents generally hope that their children have the aptitude. Many also feel proud or inferior because of their aptitude. However, aptitude is also a double-edged sword, with pros and cons. Some people receive bad influence, and thus use his aptitude to harm others. From another angle, when a person is stronger in aptitude, his desire and ambition will be bigger. Without the enlightenment from the gospel, it may be harder for him to surrender to God’s leading. Therefore, people with some aptitude, or people who are smart, capable or beautiful, find it more difficult to surrender their sovereignty to God. In <Zec 5:6> God said, “ not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” (3) Determination. It refers to the will a person is born with. Some people can execute the task well. He may not have much aptitude, neither is he very interested in the task, but he has a strong determination and thus put in hard work, endure to the end, until he finishes the given task. Often, we hear certain testimonies that, despite the harsh situation, a determined person will eventually be victorious. This is something we can witness in life as well. Therefore, sometimes when the parents scold their children, they might say, “it is not that you don’t know, but you are unwilling to learn”. These are words meant to provoke their determination. Determination brings great impact, and people have always exalted their determination and will. However, people with great determination may not realize the limitations in their determination and will. Try asking: when a spouse no longer has love, can they still resolve to love one another? Certainly, with determination you may endure and do a thing, but determination cannot make something out of nothing. We have feelings in our spirit – we need nourishment when we are dry, we need encouragement when we are disheartened - those are not something determination can solve, only the God who bestows faith and hope can do it. Indeed, interest, aptitude and determination often influence one another. Sometimes, one influence another, thus people always give excuse, “because I do not have interest, thus I cannot resolve to do well”, or “I have aptitude but not determination, thus cannot do well”. The inadequacies in these three areas often cause us to feel “cannot”. We truly have a lot of “cannot” in life, for example: we cannot study well, cannot work well, cannot manage interpersonal well, and cannot serve well etc; and we blame them all on the three attributes. Paul told us, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” Try asking: when we “cannot”, do a large part of us think it is because we do not have enough of those 3 characteristics? From another angle: when we say “God gives me strength”, does it include these 3 attributes?
