我们堕落的本性很容易犯上的错误就是在信仰中注重外在的表现过于内在的实体。这是我们在自己与万人身上都能确认的属灵光景。特别,当人外在的条件较优越(例如:背景好、地位高、知识广、善行多等),人很容易就会注重所看得见的。事实上,神住在我们内心里,神的道也将我们内心深切的事指示得清清楚楚了。倘若我们带着正直清洁的心面对主,会知道世人都一样。我们的本性都受到罪的影响,良心都或多或少有一样的谴责,而唯有不同的就是当人听见了基督的福音之后,他那对神真诚的反应带来的变化,从这里才能开始透过内心认识万有万人。但是,若一个人不在基督里进到心灵的深处,朝见那时常感动指教人的神,他的内心世界就会留在受旧人(老我)的影响。他的追求、所愿、关心,与叫他情绪波动的因素都差不多与世人一样,都在肉体的情欲、眼目的情欲、今生的夸耀里寻求生活中的方法与解脱。确实上,福音本是让我们脱离这等凡俗与自我光景。其实,当我们在基督里的新人被生出来的时候,那是一个新的属灵生物, 在这地上是没有的品种。所以这新的生命的成长,从追求属灵之事(寻求内心的主),认识与活出神的圣洁(察验神的美意而活),得以恩上加恩,这都是在内心里的顺服,本是神所认识所造成的生命。这等生命是那追求外在表征的人无法认识的。这新的生命不但认识神,也晓得透过神的真理和灵来判断万人万事。保罗的生命就是蒙受了这恩典,也因此得以判断全人类的属灵光景,他那对神的真理诚实的心,使他认识与判断了万人的良心,得以指出他们要隐藏的事。特别,他也确知那在内心不顺服神,却要夸耀他们外在的表征(盟约、割礼、律法)的犹太人。尤其保罗预测当他在《2:12-16》将犹太人与外邦人相提并论时,犹太人在心里必然产生反驳的回应,认为保罗怎能忽略他们在神面前因割礼与律法所拥有的独有和与众不同的福气。其实,保罗已经读了他们不正直清洁的内心,也确知这等高举自己外在条件的心态本是显明他们里头的不顺服。因此,保罗在福音的基准上再次要推翻这等人的自义与自恃,使他们认识自己属灵生命的可怜与平穷,以至能完全降服在神的恩典,今后寻求内心的顺服。
The mistake easily committed by our depraved nature is that we focus on the outward action more than the inward practicalization of our faith. This is the spiritual state we can confirm in all people and ourselves. In particular, when the external conditions of men are better (eg good background, high status, knowledgeable, many good deeds etc), it is easier for men to focus on what can be seen. Actually, God dwells in our hearts, His Word is instructing us clearly about the deepest matters of our hearts. If we are upright and pure in facing Lord, we know that all people are similar. Our nature will be influenced by sins, our conscience is somewhat rebuked in the similar way, but the only difference is, after one listens to the gospel of Christ, it leads to transformation in him because of his sincere response to God. From here, he will start to know all people through his inner heart. However, in Christ, if a person doesn’t enter into the deepest of his spirit and faces the God who always convicts and guides him, his heart will be influenced by the old person (old self). His pursuit, desire, concerns, and factors that stir his emotions will not be any different from the people of the world – it will be a pursuit of living and liberation due to their lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. In fact, gospel itself is to break us from such carnal and self-centered states. When the new person in Christ is born, that is a new spiritual life, a species on its own on earth. In the growth of this new life, he needs to have grace added upon grace in the pursuit of spiritual matters (seeking the Lord in the heart), knowing and living out God’s holiness (examine and live by the perfect will of God) – all these are the inner submission of our hearts, a life that is known and created by God. People who only pursue for the external acts will not know such a life. Not only will one know God in this new life, he can also discern all people and matters through the truth and spirit of God. Paul was blessed with such grace in his life, and he was able to discern the spiritual state of all mankind because of this. Paul’s heart which was truthful to the truth of God enabled him to know and discern the conscience of all men, therefore he was able to expose their hidden secrets. In particular, he saw through the Jews who were disobedient to God inwardly, yet boasting about their outward acts (covenant, circumcision, law). Also, Paul also expected the Jews to have opposing voices when he put both Jews and Gentiles on the same platform in <2:12- 16>, because they could not accept the fact that Paul disregard their unique and different blessings, because they were circumcised and possessed the laws of God. Actually, Paul had already read their dishonest and impure inner hearts, and firmly knew that their hearts of exalting their outward conditions had precisely shown their inner disobedience. Therefore, based on the standard of the gospel, Paul had to once again overturn the self-righteousness and self-reliance, and made them realized how pathetic and poor their spiritual lives were, so that they can completely surrender to the grace of God, and seek the inner submission henceforth.
