「福音本是神的大能,要就一切相信的」,这本为罗马书的内容。但何谓这大能?这是重生人灵魂赐予人永生的能力,还是超越问题的心里能力,还是能叫自己受限制的情况环境都改变的能力呢?其实在整本罗马书的内容都显示这样的能力。神的拯救当然首先是赐予人灵魂的重生,后是借着内住在人里头的圣灵与他同在,在他一切所行的亲自帮助与引导他。另外,我们如何知道这拯救或帮助已经临到一个人呢?就是当他相信的时候会显明。确实上,信心不是神的大能存在的具备条件,但却是神的大能临到(一个人)的明证。在人相信的时候,他发现神的义已临到了他(亚伯拉罕信上帝,这就算为他的义)。在人活在信心的时候,他会清楚在凡事上听见圣灵的声音,看见神的同在,得见祂的神性和永能。所以,在那信的人来说(不管是犹太人或外邦人,希腊人或化外人,聪明人或愚拙人),他们都会得见一样神的大能,认识那从神而来的义,与那永恒与万有的创造者联结上关系。这是一切要靠人意制造出来的宗教、靠道德取得自义、以行善自救之人无法进入的属灵境界,也无法明白的关系。这神的义若不是借着信心来得取,一切的守律法,行善做人将会叫人无形中进到自我优越的心境,以至看小另外一个被造人,也无形中偷取神的荣耀(这也就是目前犹太人与外邦人进到分歧的主要理由)。在另一方面也会因自己的软弱之处无形中进入受控告,隐藏自己的状态,而不是看见神显大的恩典。但对那借信心来得进入神的义之人,他心灵的状态是只有高举那赐下救恩的那位,他所夸耀的是神的义,他看待旁边的人是平等,对软弱的人是以慈爱怜悯相待,对万人是带有欠债之心。这等心灵本身就显示了神的义,这也就是主耶稣基督在地上时所显明的心灵。事实上,人生命的堕落就是自主自义,得了某些优越的条件之后却不相信这是从施恩之主而来,以致仍留在不信里。一个信徒经历不到福音的大能的最大因素是自义。在罗马书背景中,犹太信徒仍存有守律法为义之心,所以不能全然透过信心得享神的义,外邦人虽明白不需要守旧约之律,却不活在信心所赐予爱神爱人之意,以至更是怜悯犹太肢体们的盲点,等候他们取得突破。他们两者都在「本于信,以至于信」的领会上有所欠缺。他们似乎认识了有关福音的观念,却无法彰显出福音的大能,受圣灵引导来拯救、医治、帮助旁边的人。
[The gospel is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes] is the content of the book of Romans. But what is this power? Is this the power that give man born again and life of eternity, or a power in the heart that enables one to surpass problems, or a power that can change the situation or environment that constrain self? Actually, the entire book of Romans does reveal such kind of power. The salvation of God will surely give born again to a man’s soul first, be with him through the Holy Spirit dwelling in him, helping and guiding him personally in all that he’s doing. Moreover, how do we know that such salvation or help has come upon a person? This is revealed when he believes. Actually, faith is not the condition before the power of God can be realized; rather, it is the evidence that the power of God has come (upon a person). When a person believes, he will discover that the righteousness of God has come upon him (Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness). When a person is living by faith, he will hears the voice of the Holy Spirit in all things clearly, see the presence of God, His divinity and eternal power. Therefore, to one who believes (be it Jews or Gentiles, Greeks or non-Greeks, the wise and the foolish), they will all see the same power of God and know the righteousness that come from God, enter into a relationship with the eternal and the Creator of all things. This is the spiritual world and relationship that can never be understood through the religion created from man’s needs, nor self-righteousness claimed through the morality of people who try to save themselves through good works. If the righteousness of God is not received by faith, all the adherence of laws or good works will unconsciously lead men into a self-merited state. They will look down on another man who’s created by God, and unconsciously stealing the glory of God (this is also the main reason behind the dispute between Jews and Gentiles now). On another hand, one will also unknowingly fall into accusation because of his weaknesses, hiding himself away and cannot see how the grace of God is magnified in this. But to one who enters God’s righteousness through faith, his spiritual state will only exalt the One who gives the salvation grace, and all that he boasts is the righteousness of God. He sees the people around him as equal, and to the weaker people he treats them with mercy and compassion, bearing the heart of indebtedness to all. Such spirit itself reveals the righteousness of God, and it’s also the spirit revealed through Lord Jesus while He was on earth. Actually, the depravation of life is self-autonomy and self-righteousness. After receiving certain excellent conditions, he doesn’t believe all these are from the Lord who gives grace, thus remaining in disbelief. The main reason why a believer cannot experience the power of God is because of his self-righteousness. The background of book of Romans was that the Jewish believers still had the heart of being made righteous by keeping the laws, thus they could not enjoy God’s righteousness by faith completely; although the Gentiles understood that they did not have to keep the law of the old testament, they did not live in the heart of loving God and men given to them through their faith, such that they could empathize the blind spot of their Jewish brethren and wait for them to receive breakthrough. Both of them had inadequacy in their understanding of [a righteousness that is by faith from first to last]. They seem to have known the knowledge of gospel, but they could not manifest the power of God, be guided by Holy Spirit in saving, healing and helping the people around them.
