Christ and Culture <1 Co 1:21-24; 9:19-22; Col 3:11>

1.  The pros and cons that culture brings to the gospel

1Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified

2I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some

3A heart of indebtedness which was developed because of knowing the gospel

2When preaching the gospel of Christ, confirm whether we are making good and correct use of culture

1When in contact with people of different cultures, do not compromise with sin

2Confirm whether the gospel we preach is universal, instead of cultural

3The gospel that can be understood by universal cultures

(1) Human sin – “For all have sinned” is a universal truth

(2) Christ’s redemption – “Salvation to everyone who believes” is a message that all men long for

(3) Universal principles revealed by the truth

4Paradoxical relationship between Christ and culture

3.  In Christ, we should accept people of various cultural backgrounds

1We must not only respect people of various cultures, but we should also consider brethren from different cultural backgrounds as God’s gifts to the church

2Diverse cultures comfort and challenge us
